Route I – Old Town
sightseeing time: 2 hours

 

  1. The Town Hall  - gothic-baroque building from XIII to XVIII century. Former administrative and trading centre, now turned into a museum. It presents an opportunity to climb a 40 metre tower.

  2. Artus Court - build in 1891 in place of a court, is nowadays a "Cultural Centre".

  3. Nicolaus Copernicus Monument from 1853.

  4. A house under the Star - one of the grandest baroque apartment houses in Toruń dating from XVII century.

  5. Neogothic post office building from late XIX century.

  6. Holy Spirit Church – built in 1756 by lutherans from Toruń, currently used by jesuits.

  7. Rafter's fountain - from the beginning of XX century. Refers to a legend about expelling frogs from the city.

  8. Saint Mary Church - franciscans’ three-aisle church with separate choir. Altar decoration from XVIII century, mannerist organs and pulpit, gothic benches in choir and tomb of Princess Anna Wazówna from 1636r.

  9. Cezar's Arch - passages leading through apartment houses, constructed in the beginning of XX century to facilitate transport.

  10. The Leaning Tower - one of many town walls towers. From XIV century, 1.4 meter horizontal deviation caused by unstable foundations.

  11. Baroque Granary - eight storeys, from XVII century.

  12. Gothic Granary from XIV century  - one of the most interesting building from that period in Toruń, with scalariform gable.

  13. Monastery Gate - gothic, one of three such buildings surviving in Toruń.

  14. Copernicus house - place of birth of the astronomer, currently a museum.

  15. Saint John's Cathedral - old town church, now st. John the Baptiser and st. John the Apostle church, built from XIII till XV century, rich altar equipment and medieval frescos. A three-aisle building with separate choir.

  16. Dąmbski Palace - baroque, from late XVII century, façade richly decorated with arabesques, reconstructed threshold.

  17. Sailors Gate from XVI century – led to the Vistula River bank, to the harbour.

  18. Red Granary - former house of rich patrician family from Toruń – the Eskens, now a division of District Museum.

  19. Two restored neoclassical apartment houses.

  20. One of the most beautifully restored gothic apartment houses in Toruń.

  21. A big house  - blue house from late XIX century, built in a manner called "historicism".

  22. Part of Szeroka street with numerous XIX century apartment houses.
