There is no other city in northern Poland that could rival Toruń’s layout of colourful houses, wonderful monuments and the climate of Old Town streets teeming with tourists. The city is also known for its gingerbread, the tastiest in Poland, Nicolaus Copernicus University , continuing the tradition of Stefan Batory University in Vilno, and the complex of XIX century fortifications encircling the city, a rarity on European scale. Since 1997 Toruń is a proud member of the club of cities entered into UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Therefore, it is one of a few places in Poland and a few hundred locations in the world that are regarded as the most valuable heritage of humankind. The charm and prestige of Toruń is created not only by monuments and Copernican tradition, but also by its contemporary citizens. For Toruń has been one of the biggest cultural centres in Poland for a long time. Institutions and associations from Toruń organise yearly more than 1500 diverse cultural events. Spring in Toruń is inaugurated by Festival of Science and Art and the "Probaltica" Festival of Music and Art from Baltic Countries, and is ended by "Kontakt" International Theatre Festival. Tourists visiting Toruń during holidays can witness the Summer Street Theatres’ Meeting, Music Festival "Toruń - Music and Architecture" or the Summer Cinema in Town Hall courtyard. In Autumn, one can participate in Toruń Puppet Show Meeting, "Toruń Blues Meeting" festival or Toruń Book Festival. All year round, music lovers can attend concerts of The Toruń Chamber Orchestra, which accompanied numerous instrumentalists, the best orchestras and Polish soloists. Toruń – as all cities with
